Chapter Ten

Bonnie turned on her side. She knew she had to wake up, but she wanted to roll in bed a little longer. She opened her eyes, half expecting to see Hawke nestled next to her and snoozing. No surprised the space next to her lay empty. Even back at the house, Hawke always woke up at an ungodly time to work out.

Since there was plenty of space on the bed, Bonnie sprawled her entire body on the mattress. Like every other morning she woke up, Bonnie’s body ached in all the right places. She smiled to herself. Hard to believe she and Hawke had been staying in this little cabin for a whole week. The last seven days had been nothing short of amazing.

Initially, Bonnie had harbored plenty of fears about Saint finding out about the two of them. Over time, those doubts eroded. She and Hawke immediately fell into a routine here. Bonnie wasn’t surprised. Once, Destiny dropped by the house for breakfast. She remarked that Bonnie and Hawke acted like a couple who’d been together for years. They simply … fit.

Bonnie felt something vibrate from under her pillow. She pulled her cell phone out, surprised to find messages there. The reception here had been pretty spotty. She had a few messages from Saint, asking how she was doing. She told her dad she was fine. Bonnie had never been a sharer. She and Saint never had that close of a father-daughter relationship where she’d tell him everything about her life. Like Hawke predicted, once Saint was up and walking, he instantly went after those who hurt him with a vengeance. Same old Saint. Her dad never changed.

It was Destiny’s message that caught her eye.

Destiny: Any progress with Hawke?

She quickly typed a response.

Bonnie: Oh yeah. Loads.

Destiny: Tell me all about it!

She was still furiously texting Destiny when Hawke entered the room, holding a tray with breakfast.

“Who are you messaging?” Hawke asked, setting the tray on the foot of the bed.

Seeing the two plates heaped with scrambled eggs, pancakes, and bacon, Bonnie’s stomach rumbled. She was a decent cook, but Hawke was an amazing one. They agreed to take turns making meals, but Bonnie was always secretly looking forward to the meals that Hawke made.

“Destiny. I finally got her messages,” she said.

Bonnie: Text you back later. Hawke made me breakfast in bed.

Destiny: Damn, girl. I’m so jealous. Devil can’t even cook an egg.

Bonnie chuckled. Destiny had a point there. She’d never forget that one time Devil tried to make her some scrambled eggs for breakfast back when she was ten. Devil ended up burning half the kitchen.

“You look happy,” Hawke said.

Bonnie put her phone away and regarded her man. “Should I not be?”

Hawke shook his head. “I thought you’d be sadder. Graduation’s coming up and you might not be able to attend the ceremony.”

Hawke had mentioned that before, Bonnie remembered. A pang hit her chest. Her school life seemed like another lifetime ago. It would’ve been nice to be able to attend the ceremony with her peers.
